The name Braniff is an Anglisation of the Irish language name OBranduibh (pronounced OBraniv, in Irish). The name is composed of two words - bran=raven and duibh which is the genitive form of dubh=black. The prefix O means "from" in the sense of "descended from". The full meaning of OBranduibh is therefore "Descended from Black Raven". It is a rare County Down name. The original Brandubh was king of Leinster in the late sixth century. His name was Latinised as Brandubius in an early 1600's history of Ireland (I think written by Colgan), in which his participation in the battle of Dun Bolg is recounted. In the Irish language, names also have feminine forms. A lady would therefore be called NiBhranduibh (pronounced NiVraniv). A wife would be called Bean Ui Bhranduibh (pronounced Ban E Vraniv).
