"Istok" is Hungarian for "Osten"... a German name. The Osten family migrated from Neustadt-An-Der-Weinstrasse in Rheinland Pfalz Germany down to the lower Danube region of Banat in the 1730s. At some point the name was "Magyariziert" (Hungarianized). In the 20th Century during World War II the surviving Istok family members moved from what was originally Austria-Hungary (later Romania) back to Germany proper. Later some moved to other countries, such as the USA.
