First Lady MichelleObama on Tuesday described living in the White House as like being in a “really nice prison.”
Obama’s comment came during her discussion with former First Lady Laura Bush at the African First Ladies Summit in Tanzania during an interview moderated by journalist Cokie Roberts.
Roberts noted that Martha Washington, the first First Lady, also described living in the role as akin to being a state prisoner.
Obama said she loved her job and found it liberating in some respects, but confining in others.
“There are some prison elements to it,” she joked. “But it’s a really nice prison.”

Cork Wine Bar's owners were a nervous wreck, still on Monday after a visit Sunday evening from MichelleObama, according to the Logan Circle restaurant's Facebook page. In an interview with iVillage.com, First Lady MichelleObama explained that President Obama quit smoking because of his children, not just for his health.
The first lady said that Obama used himself as an example to the girls that as why they shouldn’t start smoking just because “its cool” and explained to them that the habit was hard to break. President Obama quit smoking in 2011.
“It wasn’t the presidency, it wasn’t the pressure from me, it wasn’t even his health, because he wasn’t a big smoker,” MichelleObama explained, citing their daughters Sasha and Malia as the president’s motivation for quitting.
MichelleObama added that President Obama would never smoke in front of the girls, so that he wasn’t confronted by them personally about his habit.
