JOHN RICHARDERICKSON passed away October 25, 2012 after many years of struggling with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. He was born in …go, Illinois, July 24, 1923, to Emil and Margaretta Erickson, and spent his early years in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan with most of his growing up years in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Collinwood High School and attended Case Institute of Technology. He left college to enlist in the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor and spent four years on the USS Benson DD 421, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. As Firecontrolman First Class, Mr. Erickson and his shipmates participated in combat operations in North Africa; Sicily, Italy; and southern France. After the defeat of Germany, the Benson was sent to the Pacific, based in the Philippines, and served as destroyer escort until the Japanese surrendered. The Benson was present in Tokyo Bay when the peace treaty with the Japanese was signed aboard the USS Missouri. For the campaigns she served in, the Benson was awarded four battle stars and combat ribbons. Before his discharge in November 1947, Mr. Erickson also served aboard the USS Rowe DD 564, and USS Hood DD 655.
He returned to Case Institute of Technology and received a BS in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Administration. Upon graduation he was recalled by the Navy to serve in the Korean War. After serving as Inspection Officer at the Naval Torpedo Plant in Forest Park, Illinois, he was discharged in July 1954. He worked as Plant Engineer, US Gypsum Company, …go; US Navy Department, Washington, D.C.; and the US Army, Human Engineering Laboratory, Aberdeen Proving Ground, retiring after 32 years of service. After retirement, he worked briefly for Johns Hopkins University and later as a consultant to Battelle Memorial Institute.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice, of 68 years, whom he met while they were students in high school; and also three daughters, Jennifer Smith, Ferndown, England; Kimberly Flodin, Windham, New Hampshire; and Moira Lawrence, Pennington, New Jersey; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Patricia Phillips Saunders.
A memorial service honoring his life will be held at St. Mary’s Epi…l Church, 1 St. Mary’s Church Road, Abingdon MD 21009, on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at 10:00 am.
