The word "Den" or "den" is an old Dutch word meaning "of the" or "from" and usually appears before the "true" surname. In the case of the den Hey(ij)er's( both spellings are still found in Scheveningen) it has been suggested that the true surname Hey(ij)er has been derived from the name of a town Terheijde(Terheyde), a town a about 5 or 6 km south of Scheveningen, Netherlands.Fishermen moved to Scheveningen during the 1600. I have been busy in genealogy of the Den Hey(ij)er's for some years and can track my family back as far as about 1620. email@example.com
