i recently went to our pundit in haridwar with my late mother's ashes. being interested, i wanted to see the family history from the earliest in at least that wahi{scroll book). the year was 1700 plus. during the showing, we came across a sikh name in my otherwise hindu lineage. the pundit said with a smile:we dont know about you punjabis, just what we may find! then at that moment he told me about a certain strange script used for signing by some ancestors. it wasnt hindi, punjabi, urdu, pharsi etc. it was KARKARI he told me. i remember seeing a triangle in the signature..he called it karrkarri in which the double r typed by me is representing the rr found in for eg chirriya. the word karrkarri kept on being on top of my mind from then, ie nov 2012. naturaly the surname of bachi karkaria came up to mind! now, how does this connect? i , actualy am looking for the meaning and origin of my maiden surname Didi. how far i have gotten is that Didis could be part of the Magi/Maga that came to this side from Persia, the ruling faith there having become the reason. These ppl may have tried to escape to india via land route and thereby to punjab sraswati, and by sea route to maharashtra and gujrat.or right upto gujrat etc via punjab. a source says that chanakya was a Magi/Maga too. Didi btw means the See-er in persian.
