Meaning of "Nsibirwa"

The name Nsibirwa is from Uganda. It is used by the Baganda people who constitute the largest ethnic group of Uganda. The English translation of the word 'nsibirwa' is 'to be tied to' or 'attached to'. The name 'Nsibirwa' is derived from a saying in Luganda (language) ente ensibirwa emanyibwa nanyiniyo nga efudde (lose English translation is: the owner of a cow that is attached elsewhere is only known when the cows dies). 'Ente' (cow) 'nsibirwa' (be attached or tied to) while 'emanyibwa nanyiniyo nga efudde' (its owner is only known when it dies). What used to happen long ago and still happens to some extent in present day Uganda is that sometimes a person has very few cows, whereas the person's friend or relative has very many cows. The person with only one cow may request that his/her cow should be reared with the herd of a friend of relative. If the friend of relative agrees to keep the cow then ordinarily most people may not know that in fact the big herd includes a cow that belongs to someone else. This cow that is added to the herd is known as 'ente nsibirwa' (attached/tied to cow). People in general only get to know the real owner of the 'attached cow' when it dies for example if it is slaughtered for a ceremony.
