She is the maternal grand daughter of N M Uqaili and daughter of Usman Farooqi, who was a bureaucrat and former chairman of Pakistan Steel Mill. She is the niece of Salman Farooqi, a well-known confidante of President Asif Ali Zardari. Sharmila holds an MBA and a Master's degree in Law.
