In the time I have heard, the name derived from 'des paapen' old genitive of 'the priest' = of the priest (cf. the English word 'priest'). The mogelijkse meaning is, that a priest (when I do not know) an illegitimate child fathered by an (unknown to me) woman, somewhere in Flanders, possibly she was housekeeper in a rectory. When she was asked, from whom the child was, she replied: 'des paapen', ie 'of the priest'. The definite article 'the' may indicate that everybody knew who it was. The name is almost certainly originated in Flanders and was and is still there written 'Spaepen. From here a branch to the nearby Dutch North Brabant emigrated and from there a branch or branches to the north, eg to Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam. I am of the Amsterdam branch. At the moment there are still people Spaapens in North Brabant, in the Amsterdam area, and further find them 'everywhere and nowhere', where they work or by any circumstances have ended. The above story I once heard from my uncle, a brother of my father. It seems quite plausible. But whether it is one hundred percent true, I dare not say, therefore missing me too much factual information. But a myth, I think it certainly is not.
