According to my research the name comes Witt (Vitt) from the 14th century from the Elsa with the German knights to Marienburg. In the wake of the Grand Master Dietrich of Altenburg, several miners were named (Vitt) which in Alsatian has the meaning "fast or quick." Germanized into Middle High German the name turned into Witt.
